Feeling Retro

Being a Gemini, I find my alter ego(s) making an appearance quite often. For the most part, my style is very edgy. I have never felt comfortable in “cutesy” dresses. I am not a huge fan of pink and I don’t care for anything that has too many frills and bows. I do not like to call myself a tomboy, because I am not, but I am not girly in the sense where I spend hours on my hair; I rarely brush it. I have yet to master the art of blowing my hair out. I manage to tangle my hair in the round brush while the blow dryer  blows my whole head of hair and everything on my bathroom sink in the opposite direction; it is really pathetic. Yesterday I accidentally blew dry my hair tie and lip gloss into the bathroom trash. In addition to my sucky vanity skills, I suck at makeup and feel like a drag queen if I am wearing too much (if I am wearing eye shadow, I feel I am wearing too much makeup). I cant wear heels past 4″ and I think my brother could paint my nails better than me. I have all these amazing nail polish colors knowing damn well I cant paint my nails for shit. They look really great as decoration in my bathroom though :). My friend (pictured with me in this post) pointed out to me that I need a manicure, ha. It is a full time job being a girl, sometimes I feel like I cant keep up, but then again I don’t really care 😉

So I just went on that long rant about being a girl just to tell you that in the last couple of days I have been feeling very girly. I even curled my hair! I found myself gravitating toward pastels, skirts, dresses, sparkle, and even pink. Don’t know how long it will last, but it’s been fun. I felt very retro in this polka dot dress, nude lips, and Prada sunnies.  With this look, I did feel the need to give it a little edge by adding studded booties. I originally had flats on, but I felt a little too distant from myself.

My Rooftop Terrace

The rooftop terrace at my apartment building is super awesome! It overlooks downtown L.A.- which is a magical place in itself. In addition to the cool amenities, movies are projected on the walls every night, making for the perfect movie under the stars type night.  Today I took in the overcast skies of Los Angeles and reflected on how awesome my life is. I live in this amazing city, going to an amazing school, and I have amazing people in my life. I am happy. Every day I surprise myself with how accustomed I have become to city life. Coming from a small town, of course, I dreamed of the big city, but there were days that I wasn’t sure I was ever going to make it. However, those days were far and few between…I knew I was meant for the city and now that I am here, I finally feel home!

Can’t wait to share what’s next in my life after this year, but for now let’s enjoy these hazy L.A. skies…

2011_05_04-GwynethPaltrow article-gywneth-cookbook-0103

I bought Gwyneth Paltrow’s “My father’s daughter” cookbook a couple of years ago and fell in love. Her passion for cooking is very evident and you can’t help but get excited about it too. It is almost as if she is in the kitchen with you. I love the pictures that come in her cookbooks as well. They paint a very happy and loving mood that is surrounded by food. Food really does bring people together and I love how she uses it as a family affair. Like her book says, it “celebrates family and togetherness”. I love just about every recipe in the this cookbook, but my absolute FAVES are “Bruce Paltrow’s world-famous pancakes” and “Morning Pancakes”. Bruce is Gwyneth’s father and after making these pancakes, I can see where she got her “good cooking gene”. These are AMAZING. They are buttermilk pancakes, not at all good for you, but worthy of the name “World Famous”.  When I don’t want to eat my days worth of calories and carbs, I turn to her “morning pancake” recipe. Complete with yogurt and flax seeds, this recipe is not only SO good, but (kinda) good for you.

I have yet to try any recipes from her “It’s All Good” cookbook, but there are a few I really wanna try. The only problem with this cookbook is that it calls for a lot of speciality ingredients that you cannot find in your everyday grocery store. I recommend taking this book with you to a Whole Foods, Bristol Farms, Sprouts, etc in order to get the correct ingredients.

Paltrow’s cookbooks never disappoint, I highly recommend buying at least one!

The Honest Life

I have ALWAYS been obsessed with Jessica Alba, like since her Dark Angel days. I used to pray that I would wake up and look like her…it never happened. BUT, now with her new book, The Honest Life, I can live like her!  This book has to be one of my favorites (No, not just because it’s by Jessica Alba). It has completely changed my life. She covers everything from food, babies, furniture, vintage shopping, beauty products, entertainment, etc. I have always wanted to move towards a more green and organic life, but I didn’t know where to start. It can be overwhelming. This book breaks it down. After reading this, I was making my own cleaning products, bought safer cooking pans, switched out my makeup, and even started cooking meals I never thought I could.  She writes this book in a way that isn’t condescending, but just really informative. You will have many “aha” moments and moments where you will think “How did I not know this?!”. If you are even remotely interested in your health and the health of your family, I strongly suggest this book. It has changed the way I think and live…for the better. Alba genuinely cares about the topics in this book and it radiates through to the reader. So happy she decided to share this with the public!

Buti Yoga

I’ve been working out since I was 12. Health and fitness was always a big deal to my mom and it was singed into my mind at a young age. I have tried it all when it comes to work outs: Barre Method, pilates, yoga, yogalosophy (ANOTHER GREAT WORKOUT!), Insanity (completed it twice), P90X, Kickboxing, Tracy Anderson, ChaLEAN Extreme, Jillian Michaels, and just about every BeachBody workout. I was also in the military, so working out was part of my job. Out of all the workouts I have tried, I see the most results with pilates, yoga, TA, and cardio; these workouts also bring me the most “peace”-I genuinely enjoy doing these workouts. I get bored very easily with workouts and have a hard time committing to just one. One day I was reading an article on Jennifer Love Hewitt in Shape magazine and she contributed Buti Yoga for her phsyice. So naturally, I scrammed to the computer to read up on this workout and O.M.G. It’s a combination of yoga, dance, and cardio strength moves. What a brilliant idea! It was invented by Bizzie Gold (you can read her bio here) and she has mastered the art of making you feel sexy when working out, but badass also! I NEVER get bored with her workouts and I always feel super sexy when doing it, which I think is really important for all us girls to feel-especially when working out. When doing BUTI, you not only get the Zen of yoga, but u also get the motivation to keep going with the sexy hip shaking movements she has you do, and you’re dripping sweat the whole time because it’s a SERIOUS cardiovascular workout as well. Go try it now!

Poshmark

A long time ago, I was bored and searching for fun apps to download and I came across Poshmark. I saw that it had something to do with shopping so I downloaded it. Problem is, I never opened it. Then a little while later, I decided to clean out my iPhone because it looked too “cluttered” (hmm, I wonder why). So there went poor Poshmark, deleted and out of my phone without me even giving it a chance. Thennnn, some while later, I read about Poshmark and how great of an app it is and when I went to go download it, I realized I already had it at one point. Needless to say, I now have it downloaded and check it religiously. I have already purchased more items than I care to admit and am steadily building my closet.

So what is Poshmark? I will let them tell you…

Ever wish you had a style-mate and could shop her closet? Now you can. Poshmark connects you to people whose style you adore, allowing you to shop their closets, anytime you’d like.

Have items in your closet that you love, but just don’t wear anymore? List it for sale on Poshmark in less than 60 seconds. Sell what you have in your closet so you can shop for what you really love today.

With Poshmark, you’ll fall in love with your closet…again.

Ok. The idea is pretty brilliant, right? Shop other people’s closets at discounted prices and sell them yours!

What is even better is that when you list an item in your closet for sale and someone buys it, Poshmark does all of the hard part for you. They instantly send you a shipping label and all you have to do is package that bad boy up and drop it off at a blue USPS mailbox. Once the recipient receives the package, Poshmark delivers the money into your account that you have with them and from there you can transfer the money to your own personal account…or spend it on more clothes. The decision is yours.

And because I feel like I still haven’t said enough about this brilliant company…you can enter your size in jeans, shirts, shoes, etc and search for items based on your size. Personally, I love shopping by brand (THEY HAVE ALL THE BEST BRANDS BTW-Zara, MK, Elizabeth and James, Lululemon, Urban Outfitters, etc) and you can find brand new items (with the tags) for half off.

It’s my new obsession. Check it out. Oh-and feel free to shop my closet, I am adding more items soon 🙂

ImageMammoth

So last week, I went to one of my favorite places in the whole wide world, Mammoth! It was just what the doctor ordered. The air was crisp, the sun was shining, the people were chipper and the scenery was beautiful as always. I decided to take my very dear friend there for her birthday. Nuzzled away in the mountains, we drank wine, ate amazingly unhealthy food, and spent as much time as possible outside. The air quality at that type of altitude is AMAZING. I always think “Oh, this is what it feels like to breathe.”With so many trees and life surrounding you, you have nothing to worry about. All your cares melt away and wait on the city line of Mammoth for you to get back 😉

While I was there, my friend took me up to Yosemite, which is only about an hour north of Mammoth. WOW! How on earth did I grow up in California (in the mountains no less) and never go to Yosemite?! Shame on me. I have had this wondrous national park in my backyard the whole time and only now at 24, am I finally seeing it. However, I am thankful for finally witnessing its beauty and it was everything I hoped it’d be.
